We here at Gorilla have put together a little something to show our gratitude to one of the men who started it all, and continued to bring it well into the 21st century. After practically inventing the modern computer, Steve moved on to develop modern film with Pixar, then came the iPod, iPad, etc…the list goes on. As the news of his resignation as CEO of Apple sinks in, we bid him Adieu.

We have also created a Facebook page in order to show our gratitude to Steve as he moves forward. We can’t wait to see what you do next. Visit the page to add your contributions.

Here is our dedication:

Dear Steve,

We have lived in a generation where a man has changed the way we interact with the world. From design to functionality, Steve Jobs built a culture around experience. Product experience. Technological experience. Retail Experience. I love my Mac and iProducts. Not like, or look after. LOVE. And I’ll probably never stop loving them. And for that Steve, you need a big thank you.

iThank you.

Big news over the last few days has been a 4G iPhone prototype supposedly discovered in a bar and ending up in the hands of the guys at Gizmodo. Skeptics abound as to whether the whole thing is legit, whether the phone is the real deal and just skepticism and cynicism in general.

No matter the elements of truth or fiction, no marketer could have dreamed up a better supply of buzz. Or did they….?

Apple apparently made it known the phone was lost, there are indications that it is genuine and their behaviour’s consistent with wanting to get their prototype returned to them. There’s even a story with lots of detail about how it was lost in the firs place, and how they asked for it back. But seriously, are we to believe that a company which is known for legendary efforts to prevent leaks is gonna prep a prototype for testing in the field, send him out with it on his birthday and then not massively freak out when the worst leak in the company’s history happens?
That’s not only a little out of character start to finish, it’s downright schizophrenic.

Not only that, but they haven’t hit Gizmodo with a gag order or any other sort of demand for silence. Surely anyone who went to that amount of trouble to disguise the equipment would at the very least be laying charges of theft. The Gizmodo guys took the thing apart, so add destruction of property to the list of charges.

Just how much of this whole scenario is genuine accident and how much is carefully orchestrated pr exercise is up for debate. Given what I’ve read so far, my money is on the latter, and a lot of the peanut gallery is at pains to point out the holes and inconsistencies in the whole story but still, I’m sure a lot more people have heard (and followed up on) the new phone then a straightforward unveiling at a press conference would achieve. Either way, kudos to Apple for making the launch of their next gen phone a PR success.

Jesus’ sermon on the mount may be a little over the top, but the analogy isn’t. When a man widely recognised as one of the most influential on the internet along with a well respected programmer and the senior writer of an influential tech news service all abandon the iPhone for a variety of reasons, people are going to take notice and, possibly, take action. The iPhone is still touted as leagues ahead of any other handset, even by the people abandoning it. Michael Arrington, Om Malik and Steven Frank all quit the iPhone in disgust and plan to use other models and service providers they acknowledge to be inferior. The combined effect of their decisions may be a ripple that will snowball into a tidal wave, to mix metaphorical states of H2O.

It’s interesting that while they all list the various problems, they each had their camels’ back broken by a different straw. They’ve all reached the point after dealing with issues that have irked them but clearly there’s a breaking line for everything. People may tolerate something indefinitely, but when it eventually becomes intolerable they will take definite action.

Apple often run into problems because they’re usually leading the way, and that’s fine. People put up with it because they understand the nature of trail blazing and have faith that they will find solutions with their trademark innovation and creativity. Which is why their current issues with the Google Voice App seem so out of place.
